Pinhead Institute is dedicated to raising science literacy by bringing scientists to the region's schools and sending students into the world of science in Washington D.C., Panama, Peruvian Amazon, Hawaii, California Academy of Sciences, China and other places on the planet.

This outdoor school offers ongoing adventure camps for kids from ages four to 18, which focus on hiking, ice climbing, avalanche education, rock climbing, peak ascents, mountaineering, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.


• Telluride Adaptive Sports Program 970.728.7537
A nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of people with disabilities by providing education and recreational opportunities that encourage personal growth. Winter is focused on skiing, while the summer programs are more extensive.


• Kid's Night Out 970.728.7592
Designed for ages four to 12 and offered every weeknight from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. by Telluride Ski Resort, this program includes ice skating, movies, games, dinner and more. Register at a Telluride Ski & Snowboard School desk.

Climbing Gym

Sponsored and supervised by the Horizon Program, the climbing gym is open at Telluide middle/High School most week nights during the winter for climbers of all ages. Shoes and harnesses are available.

Snowboard instruction is available for children ages seven to 12, while ski lessons are offered to children ages three to 12. Rentals are available with lessons. Classes meet in Mountain Village.

Bring the family and your sled or innertube to Firecracker Hill at Town Park. Daytime only. The Nordic Center, located in the park, rents sleds inexpensively:
